How Does Diet Affect My Child’s Teeth?
Diet plays a huge part in keeping your child’s teeth healthy and strong and free from disease. Try to limit the amount of sugary and starchy foods eaten or include them as part of a main meal as this reduces the risk of acid erosion. Instead, encourage your child to snack on fresh fruit and veggies or on cheese or sugar-free yogurts. It is best they drink plain water rather than fizzy drinks and sugar laden fruit juice.
How Can Fluoride Help Children’s Teeth?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps make teeth more resistant to decay through hardening tooth enamel and interrupting the formation of bacteria. It is found in some foods and water supplies, but we can also use fluoride applications to help protect your child’s teeth. This might be in the form of fluoride gel that is used in mouth trays or we may suggest using fluoride varnish that is painted onto the teeth and left to penetrate them before being brushed off.
Our dentists can also offer advice on the use of fluoride toothpaste, as well as mouthwash and supplements so please do ask us if you have any questions or concerns about fluoride.
