Fissure Sealants

Why Should I Consider Fissure Sealants for My Child?

Fissure sealants are great for protecting the chewing surfaces of back teeth against tooth decay. These surfaces contain lots of tiny grooves and fissures that can be very difficult to keep clean, making them much more prone towards developing cavities. Fissure sealants seal these grooves, creating a smooth and easy to clean surface. It’s important to note that these sealants can only be applied to healthy teeth that don’t have any cavities which is why we recommend their application soon after the adult teeth erupt. If your child has particularly deep grooves in their baby teeth, we might recommend using dental sealants to protect them.

How Are Fissure Sealants Applied?

Application is easy, non-invasive and will not cause any discomfort. The sealant is simply painted onto tooth surfaces that have been prepared through being lightly etched, as this improves the bond between the tooth and the sealant. Once the sealant is applied it soon hardens, creating a very thin protective plastic layer over the tooth surface. Afterwards your child will be able to eat and drink normally and the sealants should offer many years of good protection.
