Crowns and Bridges

What Is a Crown and When Might I Need One?

Crowns are excellent for covering up teeth that have been badly damaged and which have lost quite a lot of their original structure. A crown covers the entire tooth, right down to the gum line, restoring strength and structure so the tooth looks and feels natural. Our crowns are made from high quality ceramics and fit tightly over teeth, completely sealing out bacteria so the underlying tooth is protected. We generally recommend crowns for reconstructive reasons as it is always important to restore damaged teeth, but modern porcelain crowns can look amazing and are often used in cosmetic dentistry.

What is a Bridge and When Might I Need One?

We use dental bridges to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge is supported by crowns that are attached to the replacement tooth, called a pontic which will rest on your gums. The result is a strong and stable restoration that will prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of position.

The procedure for making a bridge is very similar to a crown, as the teeth adjacent to the gap will be prepared and shaped in preparation for crowns. An impression is taken and is sent to our dental laboratory so your bridge can be made to our exact specifications. We can provide you with a temporary restoration until your bridge is ready. It can be fitted and adjusted at your next appointment, before being cemented in place. Our bridges are made from the same high quality and life-like ceramics as our crowns. Your bridge should look very natural and will enable you to bite and chew normally.
