What Are Veneers and How Could They Help My Teeth?

Veneers are made from very thin pieces of porcelain that fit over the front surfaces of teeth and which are bonded onto the tooth. Porcelain veneers are an extremely popular cosmetic dentistry treatment. They are perfect for correcting small imperfections in teeth and are often used during smile makeovers. Veneers can be very useful for the following situations:

  • Hiding teeth that are badly stained
  • Mending chips or cracks in teeth
  • Closing or minimising gaps in between teeth
  • Correcting the overall shape of teeth that are perhaps a bit too small
  • Correcting teeth that are slightly out of alignment

Who Can Have Porcelain Veneers?

This treatment is generally suitable for people who have strong and healthy teeth that don’t have any sizable fillings. If your teeth are weaker or have large fillings, we may recommend an alternative treatment that will help strengthen these teeth, for example crowns.

What Is the Procedure for Having a Porcelain Veneer?

Porcelain veneers require at least two appointments at Maroubra Junction Dental Centre. During the first appointment our dentist will carefully prepare the teeth to be veneered, a process that involves removing a small amount of tooth enamel from the front surfaces. This helps ensure the final veneer looks natural and won’t feel too bulky. Once the teeth are prepared they will take an impression which is used by the dental laboratory to custom make your veneers. This process takes approximately two weeks, during which time your teeth will be protected with temporary veneers. Your porcelain veneers can be fitted and bonded in place during your next visit.
