What Are Dentures?
A partial denture is used to replace one or more missing teeth whereas a full denture can replace a full arch of teeth. Sometimes the denture will be strengthened with a light metal alloy but otherwise it will consist of a gum coloured acrylic base that supports the denture teeth. Modern denture teeth can look very natural and come in a huge variety of shapes and shades so we will be able to closely match your denture teeth to any existing teeth or will choose a size and colour to complement your facial shape and features.
How Are Dentures Fabricated?
The process for fabricating a denture is quite complex as it is important to make sure that it is constructed to the correct dimensions and will offer sufficient support to your cheeks and lips. Initially, your denture will be constructed using pink wax to replicate your gums and which will support your actual denture teeth. This is the try-in stage and will enable you to get an idea of how your finished denture will look and feel. At this stage it is easy for your dentist to modify the try-in denture until they are happy with its appearance and function. Next, the pink wax will be replaced with the acrylic and it will be adjusted to fit your mouth.
It can take a little while to get used to a new denture but your dentist will give you plenty of information on how to become accustomed to eating and speaking with it in place.
