When Might I Need a Tooth Extraction?
Here at Maroubra Junction Dental Centre, we do everything we can to help your natural teeth last as long as we can, hopefully for life. Unfortunately this isn’t always possible and sometimes we need to remove a tooth that has been too badly damaged to restore. This might be the case if the tooth is badly infected, has been affected by advanced gum disease or has fractured. We will only make the decision to remove a tooth after conducting diagnostic tests to confirm this is the only viable option. Afterwards we can talk to you about its replacement as even a single missing tooth can negatively affect your dental health.
Wisdom Tooth Extractions
Wisdom tooth problems are very common. These teeth are the last to erupt and there is often insufficient room for them to come through normally. They can become impacted, where they try to push up underneath neighbouring teeth or they may only partially erupt. We use dental x-rays to keep an eye on wisdom teeth that have yet to come through and can tell you if these teeth will be problematic. Straightforward extractions can be performed under local anaesthetic, but any more complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon for removal in a hospital setting.
