Root Canal Therapy

Why Might I Need Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is also called endodontic treatment. We will suggest endodontic treatment if the very central part of the tooth called the pulp has become infected or inflamed. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels but your tooth can function perfectly well without them.

Infection or inflammation can be caused by untreated tooth decay, a filling that has been leaking or it could be due to having a something as simple as having a crack in a tooth that opens up whenever you bite down. All these factors enable bacteria to get into the tooth.

What Is the Procedure for Root Canal Therapy?

We will access the pulp through the crown of the tooth which is the part you normally see in the mouth. Your dentist will carefully clean out all the tissues in the pulp as well as the root canals that extend into the roots of the tooth. This is done using specially shaped files as it’s important to make sure all the infection is removed. Afterwards the tooth can be restored with either a filling or a crown.

Root canal therapy is an excellent procedure for saving a badly infected tooth. If you do have toothache then please come to visit us as soon as possible as treatment is much more likely to be successful when carried out as soon as possible.
