Oral Hygiene Advice
Our dental team at Maroubra Junction Dental Centre can offer personalised advice on how to improve your dental care at home, including the correct techniques for brushing and flossing.
Make sure you use a soft to medium bristled brush that will not harm your gums. Hold the brush at a 45° angle so the bristles can get right down to the junction where your gums meet your teeth and so the bristles can reach just below the gums. Using gentle circular movements, thoroughly brush all your tooth surfaces. It can help to think of your mouth being split into four quarters or quadrants and aim to spend about 30 seconds cleaning each quadrant.
Break off up of a decent length of floss; approximately 30 cm should be sufficient to use a clean section for each tooth. Wind each end around your middle fingers so you can manipulate the floss between your index fingers and thumbs. Gently insert the floss in between your teeth, taking it right down to and just below the gum line. Hold the floss against the tooth surfaces and move it up and down so you remove the maximum amount of plaque and food debris. Make sure you use a fresh section of floss before cleaning the next tooth. Afterwards thoroughly rinse your mouth to wash away any loosened particles of food.
Orthodontics uses fixed or removable appliances to correct the position of teeth and jaws.
